History Of Teylers Museum

History Of Teylers Museum

Founded with an aim to promote Art and Science, Teylers Museum is the Netherlands' oldest and biggest Museum named after Pieter Teyler van der Hulst. Living in the enlightenment age, he possessed great interest in the study of art and Science. He believed in the fact that knowledge could boost humanity; hence, he started collecting artefacts in both fields.

The Teyler's executors decided to start the first-ever Museum in the Netherlands where objects related to Science and Art would be placed together. Several experiments were conducted using physical instruments, whereas art was used to discuss all art viewings. Additionally, minerals and fossils played a significant role in all public lessons.

Since its construction in 1784, its interior has remained in an oval-shaped hall. 50 years after opening this hall, the first-ever art expansion took place in Teylers Museum. Later in 1996, a large wing with an exhibition hall, a museum cafe, and an educational pavilion was opened in Teylers Museum.
