About the Museum

  • Vincent Van Gogh was one of the most influential and noted artists in the world of Western Art, even though his artistic prowess was short-lived.
  • His younger brother Theo gained all of his artwork following the artist’s suicide in the year 1890.
  • However, after Theo’s sudden death, it was his wife Jo Van Gogh-Bonger, who began raising public awareness of Van Gogh’s paintings in different ways.
  • It was her son who set up the Van Gogh Foundation, followed by the establishment of the Van Gogh Museum by the state of Netherlands in 1973.

  • This is also in regards to the theme of the painting, which shows an alarming sky, with crows around, and the dead-end path almost referring to the end of his life, which was fast approaching.
  • However, it is just a myth, since van Gogh made several other works after this.
  • It is important to note that he did want his stormy skies to express extreme loneliness and sadness, but also display the healthy and secure parts of the countryside.
