The Tropenmuseum is a museum about people. It is housed inside one of the most beautiful museum buildings and has around 17,500 objects from all over the world from Africa to Southeast and West Asia, from New Guinea to Latin America. The Tropenmuseum, one of the largest museums of Amsterdam, is a storehouse of 17500 objects from all around the world, each of which has a story of its own. The museum also has guided tours of 1 to 1h 30 mins such as Tropentour, Symbolism inside & outside and a building full of stories which visitors can take. The duration you spend at the museum will depend on whether you read everything, how much time you spend at each exhibit. The Tropenmuseum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm and is closed on Mondays. However, the museum remains open on those Mondays which fall during public holidays and school holidays. The museum is closed on 1st January, 27th April and 25th December.

• By Tram: Take tram no 14, or 7 to get down at Alexanderplein. Walk for 1.2 km and reach the museum in 4 minutes. Take tram no 19 and get down at Eerste van Swindenstraat and walk 600 m to reach the museum. Take tram no. 3 to get down at Linnaeusstraat and walk for 1.3 km to reach Tropenmuseum.
• By Light Rail: Take 14, 19, 3 to reach Alexanderplein or Linnaeusstraat and walk for 5 minutes to reach the museum.
• By Car: Travel by car and park your car at the QPark Oostpoort
• By Bus: Board the bus numbers 22, 40, or 41 to 1e VAN. Swindenstraat and walk for three-minutes.

The best time to visit the Tropenmuseum is at its opening hours at around 10 am, especially during weekdays, when the museum is less crowded. Visiting during this time will enable you to explore various exhibitions, events and workshops at your own pace. 

Yes, you can take photos at the Tropenmuseum and also use flash photography. However, you will not be able to use selfie sticks and tripods. Professional photographers who would wish to use a tripod will need to seek prior permission from the museum authorities.
